What is
Volumetric Filmmaking?

Volumetric filmmaking combines the artistry of cinema with the interactivity of gaming, and uncovers visuals beyond the limits of traditional media.

It is the evolution of content for a digital age where audiences seek connection. Volumetric filmmaking allows us to capture real people, real stories and real places, and invites audiences inside the virtual worlds where the story takes place. Experience rich, immersive stories in mixed reality.

History of Volumetric Filmmaking

The Scatter team was in the vanguard of the creative technology explosion, when early tools like Unity game engine and the Oculus DK1 were giving storytellers freedom to explore 3D content.

Scatter coined the term "volumetric filmmaking" to define the medium of our VR productions, the landscape of emerging creative tools, and the possibilities co-imagined with our community.

Today, emerging professional contexts for volumetric video marry the best of early experimentation with mass market appeal. Scatter continues our thought-leadership as the craft of volumetric filmmaking breathes new possibilities into virtual production, remote live events, and beyond.

Projects

With Depthkit at the heart of our volumetric filmmaking projects, real people and true-to-life performances can be placed in interactive 3D worlds.

From a remote village in the peaks of the Himalayas (Kusunda, Sundance New Frontier 2020), to the inside of an Iranian nuclear facility (Zero Days VR, Emmy winner 2018), Depthkit software allows creators to capture stories anywhere in the world.

Complementary tools like Unity's VFX Graph expand the aesthetic range of 3D captured footage from the photoreal to the fantastic.

Community

Scatter’s productions and tools have galvanized a passionate community of creators.

Scatter launched the quarterly event Volumetric Filmmakers NYC in 2018. We co-hosted our latest edition with WarnerMedia Innovation Lab.

Featuring panels and networking, the event attracted over 300 creators and corporates from around the world, including executives from Intel Sports, Microsoft, Youtube and Samsung alongside a creative class of filmmakers, technologists, engineers and artists.
